About the Lake and Peninsula School District

Our Heritage

The Lake and Peninsula School District serves one of Alaska’s most remote and beautiful regions. For over 50 years, our schools have been the heart of community life, educating generations of students while honoring the traditions and values of our Alaska Native peoples and communities.

Our commitment to cultural respect, environmental stewardship, and community partnerships is woven into every aspect of our educational mission. We celebrate the unique heritage of Dillingham, Aleknagik, Aleotian, Igiugig, and Portage Creek.

Bristol Bay geography and communities

Our Geography

Spanning across Alaska’s Bristol Bay region, our district encompasses five distinct school communities, each with its own character and challenges. From the coastal communities to inland villages, geography shapes how we teach and learn.

Our Communities:

  • Dillingham — Regional hub and largest school community
  • Aleknagik — Coastal village on Nushagak Bay
  • Aleotian — Traditional fishing community
  • Igiugig — Upriver settlement on Lake Iliamna
  • Portage Creek — Remote community accessing education via distance learning and visits
